Virgin1 to Rebrand As Channel One, and Acquires Hit Drama “V” to Launch Autumn Schedule
(August 5, 2010 – London and Burbank, CA) – Freeview channel Virgin1, part of The LIVING TV Group, will be renamed Channel One this summer.
Channel One will continue to be broadcast in the same slots on all platforms; Freeview (Ch 20), Sky (Ch 121) and Virgin Media (Ch 119) and the schedule and programming remains unchanged, featuring an impressive line-up of US imports, and compelling British home-grown and original content.
Virgin1 will rebrand to Channel One on Friday 3rd September 2010, complete with new logo and overhaul of all on and off-air branding. The channel’s website changes to www.mychannelone.co.uk and viewers will be informed of the name change by a series of on-air promos, idents and continuity, assuring them of the usual schedule they expect to tune-in to, plus further exclusive programming planned for the future.
The renaming of Virgin1 has been triggered by the sale of The LIVING TV Group by Virgin Media to BSkyB, which does not allow The LIVING TV Group to continue using the Virgin brand name.
Jonathan Webb, Managing Director, The LIVING TV Group, comments, “Channel One continues the journey we began with Virgin1 in 2007. Channel One will continue to embody the wit and warmth of Virgin1, and inherits the jam-packed schedule that has propelled the channel to market-beating growth over the last few years."
Helping to spearhead a strong autumn/winter 2010 schedule, Channel One also announces it has acquired the digital terrestrial rights for the hit U.S. drama series “V,” in a deal with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution. “V” previously aired on pay-TV channel SyFy earlier this year.
A compelling reimagining of the landmark miniseries about the world’s first encounter with an alien race, “V” stars Elizabeth Mitchell (“Lost”), Morris Chestnut (“Boyz n the Hood”), Joel Gretsch (“The 4400”), Logan Huffman (“America”), Laura Vandervoort (“Smallville”), Lourdes Benedicto (“24”), Charles Mesure (“Xena: Warrior Princess”), with Morena Baccarin (“Firefly”) and Scott Wolf (“Party of Five”).
In “V,” The Visitors are among us. In a single shared moment, they appear in every major city in the world, promoting a message of peace. They want to share their knowledge of technology and their view that we should all be one, not divided by country, not divided by fear. They want us to unite. And to do so, they are counting on a very important component of human nature: devotion.
At first considered a threat, the Visitors – or V’s – quickly become a fascination and a link to the things that lay just beyond reach. For Tyler, a teenage boy, they are his ticket to being a part of something big and something that offers hope. To Chad, an egotistical news anchor who wants to further his career, his exclusive interviews with Anna, the leader of the V’s, are crucial to his dominating the airwaves. Father Jack, a priest with questioning faith, is hesitant to believe in the righteousness of the Visitors and goes outside the church to search for the truth. There are other dissidents who believe the Visitors are not who they say they are, including Ryan, who is faced with a life altering decision when the V’s show up. And when an FBI Counter Terrorist Agent discovers, while investigating the formation of a terrorist cell, what lurks beneath the alarmingly human exterior of the Visitors, resisting this new world has never been more important - and never has there been more at stake. It truly is the dawning of a new day.
The series returns for a second season in the U.S. in November.
Scott Rosenbaum (“Chuck,” “The Shield”), Scott Peters (“The 4400”), Steve Pearlman (“Related”) and Jace Hall (“World of Warcraft” videogame) are the executive producers of season one of “V,” for The Scott Peters Company and HD Films in association with Warner Bros. Television. The series is distributed around the world by Warner Bros. International Television Distribution.
The acquisition of “V” follows hot on the heels of Channel One’s recent acquisition of sci-fi success Warehouse 13.
